Candidate for CALA-NCA Chapter Vice President/President(2008/2009):

Statement from Yi Liang
Librarian of Sonoma County Library

Yi Liang has over 18 year experience of Library Science instruction and information organization both in China and the United States, with extensive expertise in reference, cataloging and bibliographic instruction. She has been an instructor at the Department of Information Management of the Central China Normal University and its academic library. She has worked at the Mahoney Library of Santa Rosa Junior College, Sonoma County Library and City College of San Francisco. She holds Bachelor Degree of the Library and Information Science from Wuhan University and MLIS from Zhongshan University. In 2004 her second MLIS degree was granted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Currently Yi Liang is the Coordinator of the Cataloging Department of Rosenberg Library at City College of San Francisco. Yi Liang has served as Co-Chair of 2006 CALA Best Book Award ad hoc Committee and current member of 2007 CALA Best Book Award ad hoc Committee. This Committee was first established in 2005/06 and Yi took the leadership in developing the guidelines, procedures and many details. It was successfully implemented and the first winners of the CALA Best Book Award were announced at the ALA annual conference in New Orleans. The announcement was published in the Cognote, the official ALA conference publication. Yi also helped at the local arrangement committee in 2004 when CLA annual conference was held in San Jose.

Candidate for CALA-NCA Chapter Treasurer:

Statement from Janet Lin
Audio-visual Cataloging Specialist at West Valley College in Saratoga

I graduated from University of Washington, Library and Information Science and now work full time as audio-visual cataloging specialist at West Valley College in Saratoga, and part-time as reference librarian at San Jose Public Library. I served as the treasure of CALA California Chapter since 2004 and have undertaken all treasure related tasks to support various events and activities in past California chapter and current Northern California Chapter. I am willing to continue this position once elected to make my contribution to the CALA professional activities.

Chinese American librarians have been playing important roles in both academic and public communities and CALA, as a constantly growing organization, has made great contribution to its members' benefits in terms of professional communication and cooperative activities. Currently working as social science librarian and having been the membership officer of CALA North California chapter, I will do my best in working with colleague librarians and library science students in CALA to enhance our legacy by fulfilling the committee responsibilities with your help and support.

Candidates for CALA-NCA Chapter Event Coordinators (Two Positions):

Statement from Cheryl Lee
Librarian of Palo Alto City Library

Cheryl Lee would like to appeal for your vote as co-Event Coordinator. As a Librarian with the Palo Alto City Library she serves on a wide array of committees including the Silicon Valley Library System Public Awareness Task Force, public relations, youth services, and Library 2.0 committees for Palo Alto. This year, she was proud to be chosen as the Library’s representative on the Management Academy, a management training boot-camp for Palo Alto employees.

The sole reason why you should vote for Cheryl as co-Event Coordinator is she has a proven track record of being a successful event coordinator. Some of her recent event coordination projects include participation in two triumphant back-to-back Staff Development Days from 2005-2006 (over 90% satisfaction rates) and was project leader of National Library Week 2007 with three highly-attended programs for all ages.

Statement from Celia Huang
Librarian of Brooks College at Sunnyvale

Celia Huang has over 11 years of experience in academic, corporate and public libraries. She currently is the College Librarian at Brooks College Sunnyvale. At Brooks Sunnyvale, Ms. Huang is responsible for all aspects of library services, collections and facility. Celia recently was the Event Coordinator of the school’s first ever Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to celebrate the college’s expanded library and newly established student study center. She is the proud recipient of Brooks College Silver Star Customer Service Award and the company’s first ever Outstanding Staff Award.

Ms. Huang has a Masters in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University and holds a BS in Design with a minor in Psychology from University of California, Davis.

Education. MA in Library Science, University of Chicago; AB, Brown University.

CALA President 1992-93, additional terms on CALA Board and various committees, including the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, 2004-6; edited conference program books in late 80’s and early 90’s; President, CALA California Chapter 1991 and various chapter positions. Have consulted on multilingual librarianship and given guest lectures at UC Berkeley, Foothill College, and most recently at the 1st JCLC Conference; member, Advisory Board, MultiCultural Review; currently am directing the establishment of the (all volunteer) Salinas Chinese Library for the Chinese community of Monterey County.

Statement of Professional Concerns. CALA is essential to the networking of Chinese American librarians and vital to the advocacy of library service to Chinese Americans and the development and preservation of the Chinese American heritage. I will work to broaden the opportunities for members to participate and contribute to our common welfare.
